Hull KR’s hopes of a top-four finish in Super League were dealt a blow when they suffered a shock loss to Toulouse, their second home defeat within five days.
The Robins would have climbed to have fourth if they had won and instead remain sixth, facing up to the prospect of being away in the first round of the play-offs next month.
Mathieu Jussaume scored in the first half before the French side went up through the gears with Romeo Tropis crossing the line twice and Anthony Marion, Paul Ulberg and Luke Polselli touching down.
Elliot Minchella and Louix Gorman scored tries for Hull KR, who put in an error-strewn performance.
The Robins, who did not include Mikey Lewis and Tevita Pangai Jr in their squad even though their latest bans do not kick in until next week, made repeated costly mistakes and conceded needless penalties in a sign they were feeling the effects of playing their third game in 10 days.
Toulouse sensed an opportunity and opened the scoring on 30 minutes when Jack Broadbent missed his tackle and back rower Jussaume went over.
Back came the Robins in the 35th minute and Peta Hiku made the break to send captain Minchella in under the posts and they had a second score three minutes later correctly ruled out for obstruction by Hiku.
Toulouse retook the lead through a scintillating try and Benjamin Laguerre broke down the left before passing inside for Tropis to score under the posts.
Video referee James Vella then awarded Toulouse a third try when Marion went over, despite two Robins tackles, on 62 minutes.
The Robins were beaten and Toulouse took full advantage as they sucked in the home side’s defence before releasing Ulberg on the right to score in the 66th minute.
Tropis bagged his second try thanks to some shambolic defending by Hull KR on 71 minutes and Polselli touched down his own kick under the posts six minutes later.
Gorman showed his pace to go over on the left a minute from time, but it was of no consolation to the Robins.
