Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann has revealed he was diagnosed with skin cancer last year.
McCann said he was told he had malignant melanoma – a type of skin cancer mainly caused by ultraviolet light, such as from the sun or sunbeds. It is a more aggressive kind of skin cancer and can spread to other parts of the body.
The 46-year-old Northern Irishman received the diagnosis last December and said he was “ok now”.
Rovers have drawn three and lost two of their five League One games this season and McCann revealed what he had been through when he was asked about the pressures of football management.
“If we want to talk about pressure then the pressure that came on me Christmas time last year when the doctor came to see me at the training ground to tell me I had a malignant melanoma, that’s pressure. That’s pressure,” he told BBC Radio Sheffield.
“Fortunately I am ok now but I could have had five to six weeks to live.”
He added: “Pressure for me is making sure I’m ok and my family is alright. When I come in here I want to make sure I do it with a smile on my face.”
McCann, who has also had spells in charge of Peterborough and Hull City, is in his second stint as Doncaster boss and led them to promotion from League Two in 2024-25.
