AP men’s college basketball Top 25 poll breakdown


The final AP Top 25 poll before Selection Sunday saw a shakeup in the top 10. While Duke, Arizona and Michigan held serve as the three best teams in the country, Florida vaulted into the No. 4 spot, followed by Houston at No. 5. Following a road loss at Marquette to end the regular season, UConn dropped to No. 6. Illinois and Virginia entered the top 10 behind Iowa State and Michigan State.

The biggest risers in the poll were St. John’s (five spots) and Virginia and Arkansas (three spots each). Saint Louis and Miami dropped out to make way for Wisconsin and Louisville. Texas Tech fell the furthest (six spots) followed by Purdue (three spots).

Overall, seven of the Top 25 teams didn’t change position.

Stat to know: Duke has 11 wins against AP-ranked opponents this season, the most in Division I this season. It also ties 2002-03 Kentucky and 1992-93 Indiana for most wins against AP-ranked opponents by any team before its conference tournament in poll history.

Stat to know: Iowa State went on a 24-0 run in the second half of Saturday’s win against Arizona State. It is the largest run by any team in a Big 12 game this season, and the Cyclones’ second run of 20-0 or better in Big 12 play this season.

Stat to know: Miami (OH) is the third team in D-I history to enter its conference tournament 31-0, joining 2013-14 Wichita State and 2014-15 Kentucky. Four of those were overtime wins this season, tied for the most such wins by a team in the poll era to preserve an unbeaten record. Incidentally, teams to enter games 30-0 or better are now 4-0 in overtime in Division I history.

Stat to know: Saint Mary’s is 17-0 at home this season, tied with North Carolina for the second-most wins at home without a loss this season across Division I men’s hoops. Only Saint Louis has more wins without a loss (18). The Gaels’ 26 straight wins at home dating back to last season extend the longest home win streak in program history.

Stat to know: Vanderbilt is 8-4 on road this season, its first season with a winning road record since it went 6-5 on the road in 2011-12. This ties with the 2009-10 season (8-3) for the most road wins in a single season in the last 30 seasons.
