Padres reach one-year deal with free agent Lucas Giolito

Free agent right-hander Lucas Giolito, who went unsigned this offseason after declining his end of a $19 million option with the Boston Red Sox, has reached a one-year deal with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

The deal also includes a mutual option for 2027.

Giolito, 31, went 10-4 with a 3.41 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 26 starts for the Red Sox last season. He will report to Class A Lake Elsinore to build up his endurance before reporting to the Padres in mid-May.

The Padres were looking for help for their starting rotation with Nick Pivetta, who is on the IL with a right flexor strain, and Joe Musgrove, who continues to rehab from 2024 Tommy John surgery, likely to miss at least the next weeks and possibly longer.

San Diego is off to a hot start, tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the National League West with a 16-7 record entering Wednesday’s games.

Giolito missed the entire 2024 season because of elbow surgery. The 2019 All-Star also pitched for the Nationals, White Sox, Angels and Guardians since 2016, posting a 71-66 career mark with a 4.30 ERA and 1,198 strikeouts. He threw a no-hitter while with the White Sox in 2020.
