Tesla crashes into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan, killing passenger


A Tesla crashed into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, killing the vehicle’s passenger and sending the driver to the hospital, according to police.

A preliminary police investigation revealed that a gray 2024 Tesla Model Y SUV driven by a 27-year-old female collided with scaffolding, a bus stop and a mailbox at approximately 2:43 a.m. on Wednesday, a New York Police Department spokesperson told ABC News.

The driver was traveling eastbound on East 42nd Street and failed to navigate the roadway, police said.

Emergency medical services responded on the scene and transported the driver and a 27-year-old female passenger to the hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead and the driver is in stable condition, according to police.

What caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle is unknown at this time, according to police. The driver was taken into custody and the investigation is ongoing.

The heavily damaged Tesla was shown by traffic cameras in the street where the vehicle came to a stop after traveling several blocks following the initial collision, police said.

The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is handling the investigation.
